Echoes of the Quill - invites you to join a growing community focused on history and literature.
I aim to present you with historical facts, gleaned from real people living in towns, cities, or rural areas across England. People who can tell you about their lives as they happened, because they kept diaries, journals, or numerous jottings. Of interest for historical writers, playwrights, costume or fashion designers, even artists, or just those who have a love of history.
We will not travel on the usual journey through history, covering kings and queens, but sometimes their staff or the common people will hold the information. We will learn how they lived, loved, and worked during different periods of history, many times learning what they had to do to survive. Their descriptions are often found through those able to read and write, or from poets of the day, songwriters, even from artists through paintings.
Starting from the 1500s during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1st (this will not be her story). Through many years of research, I've found there were many people wanting to let the world know how they lived. Being a lover of history and a constant writer who has never stopped being curious. A problem with all writers' constantly nosey, fond of challenges, and investigating facts.
On a trip to the V&A Museum, I found a display of beautiful feathered quill pens; the display had such an impact on me. I needed to know how people made them work, which made me set out to learn everything about these fascinating, turkey, swan, goose, and peacock feathered pens. Beautiful creations, I wanted to learn how they were prepared, which feathers worked and those not. I wanted to know how people wrote so beautifully and creatively with looped swirls and wonderful calligraphy. I also noted the downside of how mistakes could not be rectified and how very soon a stunning manuscript could be a total mess! Just like my early attempts in preparing and using my first quill pens. So shall we begin to learn and answer how they felt to write with? Also, I will tell you a bit more about myself, my intentions to offer a thoughtful space to share your writing and receive constructive critique guided by clear guidelines I will set out and how all can get involved.,

My visit to London felt like arriving at the right page of a story. The town’s busy streets and historic details set the scene, but the important moment was handling the quill itself. Seeing it in a display is one thing; lifting it, dipping it in ink and feeling its subtle balance is another. That trip is the origin of Echoes of the Quill and everything we share here. From Object of Admiration to Hands-On Practice
I loved the quill as an object — elegant, fragile, evocative — until I tried to use one. The first strokes were wobbly, the ink blotched, and it felt wonderfully alive. Learning to write with a quill taught patience, attention and delight in small imperfections. That discovery is at the centre of our work: honoring beauty while making it usable.
